record
The name Blue Devils originated in 1920 by
Shenandoah's first offical football coach Al
Symbal a W.W.I. veteran who served with a
crack French unit called the "Alpine
Chauseurs". Nicknamed the Blue Devils, they
were known for their courage, tenacity and
relentless fighting spirit.

Randy Maksimik has been involved in sports his whole life and
was a star during his high school playing days at Shenandoah
Valley.

He’s spent the last 14 years in coaching, including the last two as
Shenandoah Valley’s head football coach.

Recently, the 35-year-old decided it’s time for a break.

“It’s time for a mini-vacation,’’ Maksimik said with a chuckle by
telephone Tuesday evening.

To spend more time with his young children and family,
Maksimik confirmed he submitted his letter of resignation about
two weeks ago. Superintendent Dr. Stanley G. Rakowsky
restated in writing that the program is in search of a new head
coach.

Maksimik said he will help the Blue Devils’ seniors through the
college recruiting process and would like to stay around the
program in some capacity, just not as head coach.

“I’ll probably play a different role,’’ he said.

In two seasons as head coach, Maksimik’s teams went 2-19. The
Blue Devils ended this season in Week 11 with a 17-14 victory
over Kutztown that ended a 17-game losing streak.

Maksimik accepted the head coaching job in the summer of 2013
in the wake of the sudden resignation of Mike Reese, who was
appointed to replace Nick Sajone the previous winter. With
Maksimik’s departure, Shenandoah Valley will have its fourth
head coach in four seasons this fall.

“The kids really gave their all,’’ Maksimik said. “The booster
club and administration were behind us.

“The kids were wonderful,’’ he added. “They came to play week
in and week out, no matter what our record was. It was a great
experience.’’

Interested applicants for the position may contact the
Shenandoah Valley School District athletic office at (570) 462-
1936 or svsdad@ptd.net.
